**** (PR-056) Linux Programmer
(able to reverse engineer Linux object code in consumer product)
     Compensation is dependent on experience.
Ideally, you will be working in Stittsville in our lab.
However it is possible to work from other locations.
This is a full-time, part-time, or contract opportunity.

TheUnCableGuys.ca has an immediate opening for a programmer highly skilled in reverse engineering linux-based systems running on inexpensive consumer hardware.  The goal is to add new features that were overlooked in the software running on the consumer product.

For instance, currently we are trying to compress video camera feeds using an inexpensive security camera Network Video Recorder (NVR) to achieve MPEG-4 compression.  The NVR unit does compression using a hardware chip, and that chip can most certainly support a wide variety of different frame sizes.  The problem is the current software loaded on the NVR box expects to to see only conventional frame sizes typical for security camera feeds (D1, CIF, QIF etc.).  Instead, we also require support for conventional video camera feeds that have frame sizes such as 1080p, or 720p.  The hardware chip that does the H264 (MPEG-4) compression can probably support this, but the embedded consumer firmware now on the box is not intended for this application, and does not currently support it.

The challenge is to extract and reverse engineer the small portion of firmware on the box that sets the frame size for the H264 (MPEG-4) compression chip in the NVR. Then assemble a new firmware load and re-insert that into the memory of the NVR product giving it this new capability.

SKILL SET:
----------
You should have extensive experience creating linux-based systems using makefiles, compilers, linkers, and code development environments.  You should have experience hacking linux-based consumer products. You should probabaly be familiar with ARM-based processors and other inexpensive consumer focused processors.  You should have experience disassembling object code to determine intent.  It is an asset if you have used a logic analyzer or hardware-based debugging system to follow code execution of an embedded processor.   You should have familiarity with attaching serial terminals to inexpensive consumer products to gain command-line access.

You probably have a degree in Computer Science and/or Electrical Engineering, however people without this formal education are also welcome to apply if they are experienced at "hacking" a consumer product to add new features by enhancing embedded firmware.

**** (MEC-003)  Marketing/Special Events/Event Coordinator position
$18 per hour, plus performance bonus
Working in Stittsville office or other locations.

We are growing, so we need to hire an additional Marketing and Events Coordinator, to join our team.

This MEC-003 position is with TheUnCableGuys.ca with an office in Stittsville, at the west end of Ottawa. It involves significant time travelling outside the office meeting with retail venue owners, and inspecting and organizing our sales kiosks and display-carts in many locations around Ottawa.

TheUnCableGuys.ca is now doing marketing using 10 foot by 10 foot kiosks in Shopping Malls in Ottawa, and we are about to start deploying small cart-based sales centers staffed by a single person for locations with less space.

We currently have sufficient staff to operate a 10x10 kiosk in a shopping center. It requires 1 to 3 staff for all hours the shopping mall is open. The smaller cart-based sales centers require only 1 person. We are about to deploy our first cart-based sales center this week, and we expect to have 3 operating within 2 weeks.

In the next few weeks, we need to create an additional 10x10 kiosk with new signage and tables etc since we will commence our appearance at consumer focused shows and community events (home shows, RV shows, and so on).

Each major venue we attend requires booking, legal and insurance issues to be covered, logistics to deliver our booth equipment, installation coordination, confirming we have electrical and internet hookup, confirming we have a secure place to store items overnight. Staffing each kiosk is also a challenge. Additional recruiting and training must be done, and each kiosk requires a team leader along with other less skilled staff. In each kiosk, the data they collect must be reported to head office daily, and staff must record their stop and start times in the kiosk.

The chosen candidate will help select venues, schedule them, work with our back office accounting and legal teams to ensure the paperwork is in place for us to attend, work with our IT team to make sure we have the necessary internet connectivity, work with our graphic designers and marketing and sales people to ensure we have appropriate signage and handout sheets that reinforce our brand message, and are clear and accurate and compel action from our prospects. The selected candidate will work with the HR and Recruitment staff to hire and train kiosk sales staff, schedule those staff, and measure their effectiveness. The chosen candidate may be involved in providing sales training, and will coordinate with product experts who will ensure kiosk sale staff have sufficient product knowledge to make a sale.

Marketing activities will commence in the next few months in other nearby cities and towns close to Ottawa, such as Rockland, Kemptville, Smith Falls, Carleton Place, Arnprior, Renfrew, and Gatineau. Note that commencing operations in Gatineau forces the firm to address French language issues, and the unique employment rules and signage rules applicable to Quebec. Commencing operations in Gatineau is good preparation for a later expansion deeper into Quebec. By summer, the firm will be marketing in Cornwall, Kingston, Brockville, Belleville, and Peterboro. Then in the fall we do our major launch as we scale up and commence marketing in Montreal and Toronto.

As spring approaches our venues will include a mix of indoor and outdoor locations. We will consistently appear at agricultural fairs, community events, large rummage sales, and so on. We will have a flexible kiosk strategy to accommodate venues with a 10 by 10 kiosk and stays of a week or more, or 7x6 venues with 3 day stays, or smaller venues that require only a cart with some demonstration equipment and some signage. These cart-based sales centers will be staffed by a single person and can be deployed efficiently for as little as a single day.

Obviously this kind of rapid growth and rapidly changing deployment demands consistent initial branding, with training and quality control procedures in place to measure the effectiveness of the physical booths, the marketing collateral, the signage, and the sales staff. It requires significant work lining up venues, evaluating what is most effective, negotiating appearance agreements and fees and schedules. Significant effort is still pending to define the physical aspects of each unique kind of cart or kiosk, to define the supporting signage and graphics, and to get it all manufactured and deployed. The firm anticipates a significant investment and ongoing expense to move, install, tear-down, and store all these presentation kiosks and carts.

This is a full-time position. Applications for part-time employment will also be accepted and may be applicable for portions of this job, in particular as we expand.

The ideal full-time candidate should be bilingual (English and French), highly organized, with recent work experience in Event Management, Sales Kiosk Management, Retail Management, or other recent professional work experience in Marketing and Commumications aimed at the retail environment.

Any abilities and talents in the areas of graphics design, commercial interior design, and point-of-sale retail process definition are an asset.

To Apply: Please submit a resume by email to: Jobs@TheUnCableGuys.ca .
Please ensure the job code (MEC-003) is in the subject line.
